In Honor of a Mentor, Teacher and Friend

For Mark Curran ’82, Radford University was the place where he stood out and became a leader. One faculty member, theatre professor Charles L. "Chuck" Hayes, encouraged him to do just that.

That’s why Curran, president and CEO for Lion’s Share Federal Credit Union, supported a campaign to name Pridemore Playhouse stage after Hayes, who spent four decades at Radford.

“Radford showed me that I could take a vision and make it a reality,” Curran said. “Chuck helped me with many opportunities.”

In a rallying letter, Curran asked fellow alumni to donate $75,000 to name the stage and endow the Department of Theatre and Cinema Guest Artist Program. Curran himself put forward $10,000.

Curran’s call was answered. He and Hayes were reunited at the stage dedication in 2013 and Hayes expressed his thanks for the honor.

"I'm the luckiest person in the world,” Hayes said to the crowd at the event. “You've made an old man very happy."
