Making music electronically is Bruce Mahin’s specialty as the Director for Music Technology and the Coordinator of graduate music studies. Mahin uses computers, digital and electronic instruments in many of his compositions, including his CD "By Departing Light" available from Highlander Records.
Mahin views teaching as a way to pass along the past in addition to building on the future.
Bruce Mahin/ Professor of Music:
"The only way we can perpetuate the great art, the great culture, the great society that we have is to educate the young about the importance of these things, of the things that have happened in the past and to try to train them and then they can create their own future.
"We’re talking about computers and that’s a tremendous change, the computer brings in a whole new array of control over the music and over the sound, a control that we never had before and that control, it’s a power."
Mahin has performed in more than 150 venues worldwide since 1996. During one of his performances in Scotland, a group of junior high school students danced to a piece about the1982 Los Angeles Riots. Mahin was overwhelmed and excited that his piece could generate such powerful feelings from students in a different country.
With having such a successful and diverse career, Mahin likes to practice what he teaches, which he considers to be a vital part of his life.
Mahin:
"Every musician is passionate about life and about music, because music brings passion to life, and that’s why it’s so important in our culture and music without passion is, of course, not very useful."
