Professor Bruce Chase says he loves to get students excited about accounting and the skills they need to be successful in their future careers. He also wanted to make those lessons available to the community by establishing the Governmental and Non-Profit Assistance Center within RU’s Business Assistance Center.
Bruce Chase/ Accounting Professor:
“I like challenges. I like things that make a lot of sense and then being able to see them come about. I like building things and when you can build something that is really a service to the community, it’s really rewarding.”
“So I became interested in trying to work with the non-profit community first with business issues, and then I became aware that they were looking for a broader spectrum of training.”
Chase’s group provides training in marketing, management and accounting for non-profit organizations within Southwestern Virginia, as well as training in financial reporting for government agencies throughout the state.
Approximately 80 classes are offered each year in Abingdon, Radford, and Roanoke in either 4-hour or 8-hour blocks. Since the program began in the fall of 2001, over 517 individuals from 219 different organizations have attended one or more training classes in the program. Participants include members of the United Way, Second Harvest Food Bank and the New River Community Services among others.
Chase was awarded the 2002 National Education and Training Award from the AGA, a national governmental accounting association, for his exceptional service.
And as for Chase’s future plans?
Bruce Chase:
“I really enjoy working with what I’m working and trying to see how I can make things better. And if I do that, that’s enough of a long term plan for me."
