The Radford University fountain is surrounded by tokens of remembrance and sorrow for those lost in the terrorist attacks on September 11th. All the names and hometowns of the more than 3000 victims were read continuously throughout the day on the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.
Tripp Wilkinson/Junior:
“This is a time of remembrance and just reflecting back and thinking about the future. What can we do to prevent this. For talking about why it happened and how we can make changes.”
Stephanne Downing/Senior:
“This is significant because I’m from New York. It’s a way to honor those killed in the Pentagon, Pennsylvania and New York and also those in the military.”
At noon local emergency, fire and police departments were honored for their service and support of Radford University and their efforts to keep campus safe. It was also a time to talk about those that were lost. Sara Morrisroe’s first cousin died in the world trade center attack.
Sara Morrisroe:
“After experiencing this tragedy and seeing what it has done to my family, I don’t take people for granted… for a reason.”
Listening to the stories, honoring those lost and those living in service to our communities and countries is helping students cope with memories of what happened a year ago.
Stephanne Downing/Senior:
“It’s helping me emotionally. Being with friends and family today, it makes you realize what’s really important… that’s it.”
