Recital Features Melissa Sumner and Lynne Mackey

RADFORD – Radford University guest musical artists soprano Melissa Sumner and pianist Lynne Mackey will present a recital Friday, Sept. 7, 8 p.m., in the Norwood Room of the Bondurant Center for the Arts, 1129 East Main St., Radford.

The program features American and Spanish art songs, German lieder, operatic arias and musical theatre selections.

A native of Christiansburg, Sumner is an international performer. She made her professional debut as Edith in Knoxville Opera’s production of The Pirates of Penzance. Sumner is on the music faculty of Mary Baldwin College where she serves as director of the voice studio and coordinator of vocal studies.

Mackey, a touring artist with the Virginia Commission for the Arts, is a graduate of The Juilliard School and received a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. Mackey, the first performing artist to be awarded a fellowship by the Appalachian College Association, has worked with composers George Crumb, Samuel Adler, Joan Tower and others.  She is an associate professor at Eastern Mennonite University and teaches at the University of Mary Washington and Mary Baldwin College.
