Parents Executive Committee Awards
$16,000 in Grants to Campus Organizations RADFORD The Radford University Parents Executive Committee (PEC) met recently during RU’s “Welcome Back ’09 Reunion Weekend” and awarded $16,000 in grants from its Special Initiatives Grant Program (SIGP) to University departments and recognized student organizations for projects and programs that enhance the quality of life for students. Among those receiving SIGP grants were the Academic Engagement & Community Partnerships, the RU Rockers Dance team, the Office of Registrar, the College of Science and Technology, the Radford Cheerleading team, the Graduate Student Professional Development program and the Highlander King and Queen Scholarship program. The PEC, chaired by Ms. Robin Dearing of Troutville, is a volunteer group of parents and families dedicated to enriching the education and life experiences of the RU student body. The SIGP received donations totaling more than $68,000 during the 2008-2009 academic year. About 25 percent was disbursed in grants designed to enrich student life. “Our Parent’s Executive Committee plays a very important role in university life,” said RU President Penelope W. Kyle, who met with the group and discussed future programs and operations during the recent Family Weekend. “We appreciate their investment of time and resources and value their advice and counsel. Their efforts make Radford a better university.” The PEC is active in supporting the implementation of RU’s 7-17 Strategic Plan, the 10-year blueprint to position RU as a leading national public comprehensive university through scholarships, athletics, student programs and enhanced undergraduate and graduate programs. The PEC will meet next on Sat., Feb. 6, 2010 as part of RU’s Homecoming Weekend. In 2009, the PEC included membership of 86 families who made annual leadership gifts of $250 per family. Parents interested in PEC membership can make their leadership gift online at: www.giveto.radford.edu. Gifts may be given to the Parent and Family Fund or designated for use by any program or department of specific interest.
