Appalachian Teachers Network Conference Scheduled

RADFORD – The 18th annual Appalachian Teachers’ Network Conference will be 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, at Radford University’s Selu Conservancy. The conference theme is Appalachian studies in the classroom. Retired educator Sharon Wood is featured speaker.

Sessions include “The Floyd County Migration Project, “ “Shining Light on the Youth for Our Future: Celebrating 10 years of Appalachian Arts and Studies in the Schools (AASIS)” and AASIS scholar presentations by Fort Chiswell and Rocky Gap high school students.

The ATN conference brings together teachers who strive to keep heritage and cultural traditions alive by integrating Appalachian Studies into the classroom. Participation in the ATN qualifies teachers for relicensing points.

Pre-registration for the conference is $35 and a reduced rate of $20 is available with pre-registration for students and senior citizens 65 and over. Vendors and exhibitors may set up for a fee of $20. On-site registration is available for an additional $5 fee and no guarantee of lunch. Checks should be made payable to Radford University. Registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 26.

A tour of Selu is included in the registration fee. Participants are advised that parking is limited and carpooling is encouraged.
