Peace Studies To Present Fall Film Series
RADFORD -- The Radford University Peace Studies program is hosting its Fall Film Series 2007 in November with the theme, “Cui Bono? Who Benefits from War and Injustices?” The series will feature four films, the first of which will be shown Monday, Nov. 12. All films begin at 6:30 p.m., and each reflects “how individuals and institutions in our society benefit from war and injustices and thus prevent us from attaining a truly peaceful society and world,” said film series organizer Kristan Morrison, a professor in the School of Teacher Education and Leadership. The series runs through Nov. 15, and begins with Maxed Out, a documentary that examines debt in America and explains how the modern financial industry works and offers reasoning behind why the poor are getting poorer while the rich keep getting richer. Maxed Out plays Monday, Nov. 12 in Russell Hall room 033. Iraq For Sale: The War Profiteers, is a documentary portraying the actions of U.S. corporate contractors involved in the war in Iraq. The film seeks to explain how American companies are making profits at the expense of their own workers as well as that of the taxpaying public. Iraq For Sale is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 13 in Russell Hall room 007. Lord of War is a feature film described as a dark comedy drama that demonstrates how one man got rich selling battling nations the tools of war. The film is rated R, and plays Wednesday, Nov. 14 in Russell Hall room 033. Sicko is the final film of the series. The Michael Moore movie sets out to investigate the American healthcare system and shed light on complicated medical affairs of individuals and local communities. Sicko is rated PG-13 and is set for Thursday, Nov. 15 in the Bonnie Hurlburt Auditorium. The RU Peace Studies Program encourages each student to take the initiative in creating his or her own uniquely-designed 18-credit hour minor by taking courses linked to peace issues and by pursuing guided independent studies. The program offers students an opportunity to reflect on fundamental social issues and provides a variety of options for engaging these issues in the service of a more peaceful, secure and just world.
