RU Hosts Messiaen Centennial Concerts

RADFORD – Concerts honoring the 100th birthday of composer Olivier Messiaen will be Monday, Feb. 4, and Thursday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m., in Radford University’s Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall.

Described as one of the most prolific and original composers of the 20th century, Messiaen’s works are diverse and wide-ranging. These celebration concerts feature keyboard works for piano and organ, solo pieces for clarinet and flute, vocal and choral selections and instrumental chamber works.

RU faculty performing are clarinetist David Allen, flutist Carla Copeland-Burns, tenor Donald George, mezzo-soprano Clarity James, pianists Lucy Mauro, Nitza Kats, Elizabeth Tomlin and David Brandon Phillips; violinist Vladmir Kromin, organist Marilyn Meador and RU choral and instrumental ensembles. Under the direction of conductors David Castonguay and Wayne Gallops, music professor David Zuschin and guest Kathleen Harshberger will narrate the programs.
