RADFORD -- Outside the Box: 25 Design-Tech Strategies to Save You Time and Money, featuring columns by Radford University Theatre and Cinema chair Carl Lefko, has been published by the Southern Theatre Conference. The book is the first in the SETC Field Guide Series, a collection of new and previously published works by professionals in theatre and cinema.

Lefko (right) began and edited a column in the quarterly publication Southern Theatre more than 10 years ago. His focus was cost-saving and innovative solutions to design and technical problems. RU faculty member David Wheeler’s article “Star Drop: Create an LED Night Sky for Under $600”, is featured in the book.

Also included are articles by RU alumni David Whitney and Stuart Beamon. Whitney’s article, “Curved Steel: How to Build a Machine to Bend Steel Beams,” summarizes a project he completed during his studies at RU. Beamon, who replaced Lefko as editor of the column, wrote “Snow: Make a Snowflake for Less than $60” and “Into Thin Air: Make Actors ‘Disappear’ without Pyrotechnics.”
