Small Project Support Center Offers Innovation and Experience
RADFORD -- Regularly, information technology student teams complete software development projects for on campus organizations. In the past, when the class was over and the students delivered a working system, the instructor was left to support the project.
Now, the Small Project Support Center, directed by IT assistant professor Jeff Pittges, relieves the support burden from the instructor, which makes live projects more attractive to faculty. The center also solicits and evaluates project proposals and works with instructors to define a project that is suitable for their specific class.
Last fall, the Web Development (ITEC 325) class added features to the Technology in Learning Center's registration system, which allows the TLC to create course descriptions, post them online, schedule courses and offer online class enrollment.
This fall and spring, the Software Engineering II and III classes are working on a new release of the online Faculty Annual Report (FAR) system. Last summer, the SPSC team conducted a full end-to-end test of the system, fixed bugs and added a few features. Eight of the ITEC faculty used a beta release of FAR to submit their 2007 annual reports. The center hopes to complete a version of the system that all university faculty will be able to use.
