President Kyle, Mayor Starnes to Open Special Olympics Spring Games at RU

RADFORD – The annual Special Olympics Spring Games Track and Field Competition will be held Saturday, April 28 at Radford University’s Patrick D. Cupp Stadium. More than 200 Special Olympics athletes from across southwestern Virginia have been training for the event since late March. RU President Penelope W. Kyle and Radford City Mayor Tom Starnes will speak at the opening ceremonies, which begin at 9 a.m.

Following the ceremonies will be a full day of track and field events ranging from basic motor skills to softball throw to a 1500-meter run. Events will conclude at 3 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, events will be moved inside the Dedmon Center.

The event provides an opportunity for students, faculty and area residents to witness firsthand the spirit of competition and excellence of Special Olympics sports. Radford University and Virginia Tech students, along with New River Valley community members, will join forces to host the event. Special Olympics athletes will have their own “Orange Effect” in honor of the Virginia Tech Community. The Special Olympics athletes and coaches will wear orange Special Olympics team t-shirts.

Volunteers are still needed for this event. Anyone interested in volunteering should plan to register at RU’s Cupp Stadium between 8 and 9 a.m. the morning of the event.  The games are free and open to the public. To learn more, contact Special Olympics at nmorehouse@specialolympicsva.org.
