RU Connected Sports -- August 2005

FALL SPORTS OPEN SEASONS -- The men's and women's soccer teams and the women's field hockey teams each will play their home openers at RU this coming weekend. The men's soccer team will take on Mount St. Mary's Friday night, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. at Cupp Stadium, while the women's soccer team will host UMBC Saturday at 1 p.m., and the field hockey team will play Robert Morris at noon that same day. The volleyball team opened at home during the past week, splitting matches with Norfolk State and Wofford. The men's and women's cross country teams begin action Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Festival in the Fields in Blacksburg. HIGHLANDER HOOPS -- The men's and women's basketball schedules for 2005-2006 both feature games against neighboring Virginia Tech. The men's squad will be playing the Hokies in Blacksburg in the opening game of the NABC Classic on Nov. 10, while the women will host VT on Dec. 7. For a look at the team schedules for basketball or any RU sport, visit the web site and select that team from the pull down menus.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PICKED 3RD IN PRESEASON POLL -- The women’s soccer team was picked to finish third in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll. The Highlanders received one first-place vote in the poll, which is voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. In the men's pre-season poll, a fifth place finish was predicted for the Highlanders.

TERRY TAPS LATTER TO LEAD CROSS COUNTRY -- Terry Taps Latter To Lead Cross Country Radford University director of Track and Field and Cross Country Glenn Terry has announced the hiring of Phil Latter as assistant coach for cross country.

SAYER REPRESENTS HONG KONG AT 2005 DAVIS CUP -- Radford freshman Martin Sayer represented his native country of Hong Kong at the 2005 Davis Cup held from July 13-17 at the Victoria Park Tennis Centre in Causeway Bay. Competing in Group III of the Asia/Oceania Zone, Hong Kong won all five of its matches during the week to earn a promotion to Group II in 2006.
