Richotte and Spence Qualify for NCAA Regional Championships

Lynchburg, Va. - Radford track and field posted five first place finishes at the 2005 Liberty Invitational, while Brian Richotte and Jeremiah Spence qualified for NCAA Regional Championships in the hammer.

Richotte’s distance of 202-09 gave him first place, while teammate Spence threw a distance of 188-08 in the event to place second. Richotte’s throw set a new school record. Spence also placed fifth in the discus event with a mark of 141-09.

Tiffany Evans and Maurika Quarles both picked up first place victories. Evans recorded three on the day. She tossed a 45-03.00 in the shot, 136-10 in the discus and 173-00 in the hammer throw. Her hammer throw distance set a new school record. Quarles was victorious in the 400 meter hurdles where she clocked a time of 1:02.77. Quarles also grabbed second in the 100 meter hurdles (14.73). Quarles has already qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 400 meter hurdle event.

Other highlights for the Highs include several top-five finishes. On the women’s side Jasselle Cruz and Lauren Diggs placed fourth (1:00.03) and fifth (1:00.31) respectively in the 400 meter dash. In the field events Alisha Bryant placed third in the long jump with a distance of 17-06.25 and Tricia Benson claimed third (148-05) in the hammer.

On the men’s side Ross Bolden placed second in the long jump, while teammate Daniel Oseth placed third. They recorded distances of 22-06.50 and 22-01.00 respectively. James Nixon took fifth in the shot (49-04.50)

In the running events Wayne Gore picked up third (56.29) in the 400 hurdles and fourth (49.82) in the 400 meter dash. Teammate Antoine Woods placed third (15.48) in the 110 hurdles and fourth (56.33) in the 400 meter hurdles.

The Highlanders will gear up for the Big South Championships in two weeks. It will be held in Lexington, Va. on April 14-16.
