Spence's Hammer Throw Victory Highlights Highlanders' First Day at Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Charleston, S.C. -- Radford's Jeremiah Spence (Riner, Va.) became the first Highlander to win the hammer throw at the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a school record toss on the first day of competition. Also earning All-Conference honors was freshman Tiffany Evans (Dumfries, Va.) in the hammer throw.

Spence recorded a throw of 180'03.00", almost 10 feet ahead of his nearest competitor. Evans placed second with a distance of 160'07.00", , Sophomore Tricia Coughlin (Penacook, N.H.) is third in the heptathlon after four events with 2621 points.

After the first day, the men's team is in fourth place with 11 points, while women are third with eight points.

Competition continues tomorrow and Saturday.
