Men Fifth, Women Sixth at JMU Open

NEW MARKET, Va. - The men's cross country team placed fifth with 127 points, while the women placed sixth with 164 points at the JMU Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning at the New Market Battlefield.

Two Highlanders finished the 8,000 meter run in the top 25. Sophomore, Mike Meehan (Orange, Va.) finished 19th with a time of 26:31.41 followed by freshman Joel Hanlon (Winchester, Va.) who finished 20th in a time of 26:35.86.

Freshman Sean Bossman (Yorktown, Va.) completed the race in 27:13.62 to finish 27th.

For the men, it was a nine-team competition. JMU compiled only 24 points to place first ahead of Maryland's 39 points. Taking third was Elizabethtown (81) followed by Lynchburg (120), Howard (153), Bridgewater (210), Eastern Mennonite (230) and George Mason (242).

Maria Geary (Harrisonburg, Va.) finished 16th in the 5,000 meter race running a time of 21 minutes, and 20 seconds. Sophomore Rachelle Estes (Yorktown, Va.) and Freshman Daphne Propst (Crimora, Va.) finished 28th (22:03.00) and 30th (22:07.00) respectively.

On the women's side, JMU placed first among the eight-team competition with 23 points while Maryland finished second with 32 points. Finishing third was Virginia Commonwealth (89) followed by Howard (138), George Mason (154), Lynchburg (171) and Bridgewater (191).

The Highs travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to compete in the Winthrop Invitational next Saturday September 25th.
