Highlanders Blanked by Coastal, 1-0

Conway, S.C. -- Radford University was shutout by Coastal Carolina 1-0 in women's soccer action. Laura Weiler's goal in the 34th minute was all the Lady Chanticleers would need as they improved to 9-8-1 overall and 3-2 in the Big South. The Highlanders fall to 6-7-2, and 2-2-2 in the Conference.

Weiler's goal came with 11:35 to play in the first period off a short cross from the right of the Highlanders' goal from senior Mary Jo Hajek. Radford keeper Annaliese Yoder (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill) dove for the ball, and Weiler took advantage of the opportunity, dribbling to her left for the open shot.

Candace Doten earned the shutout, making four saves. Yoder and Tara Oleartchick (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) each played a half, tallying three and two saves respectively.

The Lady Chants out shot the Highlanders, 15-11. Kara Ramer (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) and Lindsey Pendergraph (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) each led RU with three shots apiece. Bobbie Parson was tops for CCU with four.

Radford will be back in action on Sunday when they host Delaware State at 1 p.m. It will be the final home match of 2003 and the Highlanders will be honoring their senior class prior to kickoff.
