Highlanders Cold From The Field, Fall to Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Radford got off to slow starts in each half and Memphis received a combined 30 points form Jennifer Sullivan (14) and Victoria Crawford (16) as the Highlanders fell to the Tigers, 62-37, this evening from the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Highlanders shot a school record low 19.3 percent from the field, hitting just 11 field goals for the game. Senior Taryn Causey (Collierville, Tenn.), who was making a homecoming, led RU with 13 points and four steals.

The Highlanders got off to a slow start in the first half, not scoring until the 13:32 mark and falling into a 15-4 hole with 12:04 on the clock. Memphis was paced by six points from Hart and Butler during the early stretch of the game. Radford then went on a 7-2 spurt, behind three’s by sophomore Shavon Earp (Hampton, Va.) and freshman Serena White (Durham, N.C.) to cut the deficit to 17-11. The Tigers responded pushing the lead to 27-13 on the heels of eight points from Victoria Crawford. RU got it down to 31-21 by the break.

Memphis put the game away early in the second half using a 9-2 spurt to take an 18 point lead. The Highlanders then went cold, not scoring for over 10 minutes, as the Tigers pushed their lead to 59-25. Radford closed out the game with a 12-3 run to make the final, 62-37.

Radford outrebounded the Tigers, 43-38 and had four blocks on the night as well. Sophomore Sarah Stephens (Hampton, Va.) posted seven points and a team best seven rebounds with freshman Corrie Fertitta (Roanoke, Va.) posting six boards, five offensive, two assists and two blocks. Tamika Butler chipped in with 11 points for the Tigers.

The Highlanders return home for a New Year’s Eve matinee against Western Carolina. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
