Volleyball Falls at Birmingham Southern

Birmingham, Ala. - Cassie Reed and Danielle Graff led Birmingham-Southern with double-digit kills as the Panthers defeated Radford 3-0 in Big South Conference volleyball action Sunday afternoon in the Striplin Center. Reed posted a match-high 11 kills and Graff recorded ten kills to lead BSC to a .336 hitting percentage for the contest.

With the win, Birmingham-Southern moves to 4-3 in league play and 10-9 overall. The Highlanders fall to 2-19, 1-5 in the Conference.

Tiffany Guthrie led the Highlanders with eight kills and libero Allison Ainsley recorded ten digs in two games. Guthrie and Elizabeth Aldredge posted three blocks on the day.

BSC's wingers attacked Radford in the opening game, recording a .538 hitting percentage as a team, led by six kills from Reed and Sarah Martin. Birmingham-Southern forced the Highlanders to a negative percentage as RU committed seven attack errors in the opening contest as the Panthers took game one 30-12.

Reed continued to tack on to her kill total, adding three more in game two. The Highlanders threatened to rally late in the second game, embarking on an 11-2 run to even the score a 28 on a kill by Tiffany Guthrie. BSC junior Rachel Malmborg quickly ended the rally with a cross-court kill on a RU overpass and Kyndall Waters served two straight to give BSC the second game, 30-28.

Radford took the lead for the first time in the match in the third and final game, as Guthrie swatted a cross-court shot to give the Highlanders a short lead a 3-2. Malmborg again snapped the rally with a deep line shot to knot the score at 3. Reed served 11 straight as the Panthers spread their lead to 18-4 and BSC captured game three and the match 30-14.

Graff recorded her eighth double-double of the year with a team-high ten digs to match ten kills and three blocks. Waters posted 34 assists in the three-game contest.
