For those of you who are familiar with Radford University soccer, you should remember the name Ian Spooner. Arguably one of the greatest players to don the Radford Red, Spooner returns for his third season as Sohrabi’s assistant. Spooner ended his stellar four-year career at RU, second all-time in goals (58) and points (140) and in assists (24). A four-time first team all-conference selection, Spooner is the only player in Big South Conference history to garner back-to-back MVP awards in 1994 and 1995. As a senior, his 20 goals and 49 points topped the league becoming only the second player in school history (pro player Dante Washington ‘90 was the other) to lead the BSC in goals. Prior to his return to RU, Spooner was the first head coach at Bridgewater College in 1998. In just two seasons, Spooner led a team that mostly consisted of freshman and sophomores to a 21-11-1 overall record and had six players named to all-conference teams. In their inaugural NCAA season of 1999, he led the Eagles to a 9-7 record. He followed that with an impressive 12-4-1 2000 campaign. Receiving his degree from Radford in 1995, Spooner went on to have productive professional career with both the Wilmington Hammer Heads and Roanoke Wrath of the ‘A’ league. He and his wife, Kathryn, reside in Christiansburg with their three-year old son Caden and newborn Rhyse. |
