Amy Kvilhaug enters her third season as the head coach of the Highlander Softball Program. In just her second year, Kvilhaug's Highlanders made vast improvements. After winning just 17 games in her first season, RU rattled off 31 victories, the second most in program history, finishing 31-32. Under her guidance, three Highlanders were named All-Big South, totalling seven players in two seasons. Also, Radford's defense has improved, setting school records in each of her first two seasons for fielding percentage and fewest errors. In 2004, the Highlanders improved its fielding percentage to a school best .963 and reduced its errors from 2003 by nine to 64, as well as recording the most putouts (1,249) in school history. Offensively, they produced a school record 18 triples and RU pitchers recorded the most strikeouts (309) in a single season. In her first season as head coach, Kvilhaug led the Highlanders to a second place finish in the Big South regular season. Radford had four players named to the All-Conference squad, including first team second baseman Lara Wohlgemuth. It tied for the most All-Conference players in school history. "I plan to set high goals for the team and program, and with the help of what I consider to be a very supportive administration and athletic staff, I believe we can achieve much success," states Kvilhaug. A four-year letterwinner at Providence College from 1993-1996, Kvilhaug earned BIG EAST Rookie-of-the-Year honors in 1993 to go along with First Team All-BIG EAST, Second Team All-New England and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament MVP that same year. As a team captain, she helped lead the Friars to a BIG EAST Championship in 1994 and the ECAC Championship in 1995. She left PC holding single season school records in appearances (30), games started (29), innings pitched (215.2) and wins (24). "We believe Amy will be a great fit for the RU softball program," said Greig Denny. "She is a young, but experienced, softball coach who demonstrates a great enthusiasm and passion for the sport of softball." During her time with the Friars, she worked primarily with the pitchers and assisted with recruiting and all other administrative and coaching duties. Prior to Providence, she spent the 1999 season as an assistant at Seton Hall where she played an instrumental part in turning around a team that had finished 0-15 in the BIG EAST to a 14-2 conference record a year later. She also spent one year at Rutgers in 1998 and the year before as the pitching coach at Florida Southern College. She has also spent time working at several camps since graduating from Providence. Since 2000, she has traveled to Tallahassee, Fla. to work at Florida State’s summer camps. A native of Taunton, Massachusetts, Kvilhaug graduated from Taunton High School in 1992 and Providence College in 1996 with a bachelors of science in marketing. |
