Highs Split on Day Two of FSU Invitational TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Radford scored nine runs in the third as it cruised to a 10-2 five inning win over St. Joseph's to earn a split on day two of the Florida State Invitational. RU fell to #21 Florida State, 4-0 in its first game this morning. Radford improves to 16-13 overall. In game two, senior Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va.) became RU’s all-time hits leader when she doubled to right center in the third inning, giving her 193 career base knocks. It broke Suzie Rath’s mark of 192 that has held up since 1996. (correction to previous statement that stated she tied the record) The Highlanders broke open a scoreless game with a nine-run third. The inning was highlighted by freshman Ashley Taylor's (Ringgold, Va.) first collegiate grand slam, her second round tripper of the season. The Hawks tallied both their runs in the fourth with RU adding the 10th run in the bottom of the inning. Taylor finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C.) also went 2-for-3, each with a double. Clayton knocked in a pair of run, while Walling recorded a stolen base. Felix earned the win in the circle, allowing zero earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. She improved to 12-7 on the season, matching last season's victory total. Seminole pitcher Casey Hunter (10-6) struck out 17 and only allowed two singles, while walking one batter. FSU scored a single run in the top of the first on a two out bases loaded walk. They would add three more in the third on a two-run double by Leslie Palmer and a run-scoring double by Kim Hoffer. Palmer finished 2-for-3 with three RBI with Natasha Jacob going 4-for-4 at the plate for the Seminoles. Sophomore Breanna Felix (Spring Valley, Calif.) suffered the loss allowing nine hits, while striking out six and walking two in four innings of work. Taylor tossed three innings of scoreless relief. She struck out five and gave up two hits. Freshman Ashley Carlson (Chesapeake, Va.) and junior Danielle Tompkins (Equality, Ill.) each single for the Highlanders. Radford, finishing second in Pool A, will play Troy (20-10) from Pool B at 11 am in the third place game. |
