Wohlgemuth, Walling Help Highlanders Sweep Liberty
Wohlgemuth Breaks Single Season Walk Record in Game Two

Radford, Va. -- Radford registered 22 hits, which included a 5-for-5 performance from Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) and a 4-for-6 showing by Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C./Stratford), as they swept Liberty in a Big South doubleheader this afternoon on senior day from Dedmon Center Field. The Lady Flames fall to 19-40 overall and 4-8 in the Conference.

Radford honored their lone senior Hallie East (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) this afternoon. The third baseman went 2-for-6 on the day with two runs scored.

The Highlanders move over .500 for the first time since Feb. 13, 1999, when they were 2-1. They also become just the second team to reach the 30-win plateau in RU’s 13-year career. Also, Wohlgemuth with a walk in the first inning of game two broke the single-season record of 25 held by Ashleigh Brooks. She walked one more time and currently has 27.

The Highlanders struck for three runs in the bottom of the third in game one. Jen Bosley (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) led off with a double to left center and was sacrificed to third. After Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md.) reach on an infield single, Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College) knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice grounder to short. Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va./Northside) plated Woody with a double to center and Clayton scored on a squeeze bunt by Walling. It was Smith’s 15th double, tying her for third best in a single season.

Lauren Hahn tied the game at three in the top of the fourth with a one-out three-run home run to left center. Amanda Maska and Terra Lowe, who reach on singles scored on the blast.

Radford pushed two across in the fifth on a RBI groundout by Danielle Tompkins (Equality, Ill./Woodside (Va.)) and a run scoring single up the middle by Amber Drexel (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut). They added an insurance run in the sixth on Walling’s sacrifice fly to left.

Breanna Felix (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) improved to 11-8 with the win. She gave up six hits, struck out six and walked one. Sara Swor (13-13) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits. She struck out two and walked three.

In game two, the Lady Flames took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. They would load the bases on a walk and two singles. With two outs, a roller back to the pitcher was misplayed allowing Terra Lowe to score.

Radford exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Five straight singles to lead off the inning plated the first three runs. Clayton knocked in the tying run and Smith’s plated the go ahead runs. Walling made it 4-1 with a RBI ground out and Smith scored the fifth run when the catcher’s pickoff attempt hit her and rolled into left.

She scored on Clayton’s double off the leftfield fence. With two outs, Walling plating Clayton with the final run of the game.

Wohlgemuth finished 2-for-2 with two runs and a pair of walks. Her four hits on the day give her 158 in her career, fourth highest in Radford and her three total runs tie her for third best in a single season with 38. Clayton, Walling and East each had a pair of hits. East scored two runs, while Clayton crossed the plate twice and also had a pair of RBI, moving her into a tie for fourth highest with 37 this season. Smith

Kat Peck (Manassas, Va./Young Harris College) earned the victory, giving up an unearned run on just four hits. She struck out four and walked three to improve to 7-8. Felix pitch one inning of relief with one strikeout. Terra Lowe (2-8) took the loss for Liberty, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits in four-plus innings of work. She struck out four and walked one.

Jeffries, Campbell, Hahn and Ericka Rasmussen each had a hit for the Lady Flames. Jeffries finished the double header 3-for-5 with Hahn going 3-for-6 with a run scored and three RBI.

Radford has concluded their regular season and will be off until the Big South Tournament to be held in Birmingham, Ala. from May 13-15.
