Highlanders Split on Day Two of Highlander Classic
RU to play in Championship Game

Radford, Va. --Radford University defeated Brown, 11-1 in five innings, before falling to Niagara, 8-3 in their second game of day at the Highlander Classic. Radford moved to 17-21 overall and 3-1 in the Tournament and will be in the Championship game tomorrow at 11a.m. The Brown Bears, after defeating Maryland-Eastern Shore 15-0, record stands at 6-6 and 2-2 in the Tournament. Niagara, who fell to Albany 5-1, are 8-13 overall and 2-2 at the Classic.

The win by Brown, coupled with their earlier victory over Niagara, will finish as the three seed and will face Albany, who finished 3-1 during round-robin play after a -0 win over UMES, at 9 am tomorrow on field one to determine who will play the Highlanders in the Championship game at approximately 11 a.m. The four vs. five seed game will pit Niagara vs. UMES at 9 a.m. on field two.

RU used a seven-run fourth and took advantage of five Brown errors to break open a 4-1 game a cruise to the victory over the Bears. Kat Peck (Manassas, Va./Young Harris College) picked up the win, improving to 6-5 overall. She struck out five and scattered five hits, walking none.

The Highs took advantage of two Brown errors to push across a run in the top of the first. They added three in the third on a RBI singles by Peck and Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) and another Brown error.

The Bears made it 4-1 with three-straight two-out singles, the third by Laura Leonetti, knocked in Rachel Fleitell in the bottom of the third. Fleitell finished 2-for-2 for the Bears

In the seven-run fourth, Radford had just two hits, but took advantage three wild pitches, three passed balls and an error by the Bears. The only two hits were run-scoring doubles by Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C./Stratford) and Wohlgemuth.

Wohlgemuth went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va./Northside) and Amber Drexel (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) each scored a pair of runs for the Highs.

Against Niagara, the Purple Eagles scored six runs in the first two innings and never looked back as they defeated RU. Radford was held to five hits by Andrea Crapo, who struck out four and allowed just one earned run in her complete game win. Colleen Larson finished the game 3-for-4 and Kristina Kilian was 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Purple Eagles.

Niagara got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs on four hits. Two of those runs came on back-to-back RBI singles by Larson and Killian. Niagara would add four more in the second on just one hit. That lone hit was a two out three-run homer to left center by Kilian.

The Highlanders put two on the board in top of the third on a RBI triple by Sara Beth Clayton (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College). She would score when the relay throw was misplayed by the second baseman.

Niagara made single runs in the third and fifth innings. In the third, a double, followed by a sacrifice bunt and an RBI fielder’s choice by Shannon Mongalise made it 7-2. Mongalise doubled with two outs in the fifth and scored on a single by Lauren Dombrowski.

Radford closed out the scoring in sixth. Woody led off with a single and scored with two outs on a misplayed grounder by the second baseman.
