Highlanders Come-From-Behind, Twice, to Sweep Brown
Radford, Va. --Sarah Beth Clayton’s (Chesapeake, Va./Louisburg College) RBI triple in the eighth inning completed Radford’s second comeback of the day as they defeated Brown, 5-4 to complete a two-game sweep of the Bears. The Highlanders scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win game one 2-1. RU, which reached 20 wins for the first time in three seasons, improves to 20-21, while the Bears fall to 6-9. In game one, the Bears struck for a run in the top of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by pinch hitter Sarah Hans, scoring Courtney Jenkins who singled with one out and stole second. Radford rallied in the bottom of the seventh with two runs to win the game. Lindsay Woody (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) led off with an infield single and scored on the game-tying triple by pinch hitter Amber Drexel (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut). Danielle Tompkins (Newport News, Va./Woodside) plated Drexel with the winning run on a grounder to second. Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) picked up the win and improved to 11-9 on the season. She allowed four hits, striking out one and walking one. Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) went 2-for-3 for the Highlanders. Marissa Berkes suffered the loss, striking out five and giving up five hits, while walking one. Jenkins finished 2-for-2, while Jenkins and Melissa Ota singled for the Bears. In game two, Brown posted a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings on an RBI double by Jaimie Wirkowski in the first and a run-scoring triple with two outs by Melissa Brown in the third. Radford took the lead in the fourth with three runs. After a walk and single, Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C./Stratford) singled home Colleen Casey (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) from second. With runners on second and third, Hallie East (Roanoke, Va./Glenvar) executed a suicide squeeze, scoring Woody from third. Walling would cross home on a grounder to first that was misplayed. The Bears regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Mary Sied tied the game scoring on a wild pitch. With two out, Andrea Miranda singled over the third base bag to chase Barbara Maloni home with the go ahead run. RU tied it up in the bottom of the inning when the rightfielder dropped Walling’s fly ball, allowing Kat Peck (Manassas, Va./Young Harris College) to score from third. In the eighth, Sutton was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Wohlgemuth, setting up Clayton’s heroics. Breanna Felix (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel) picked up the win in 3.1 innings of relief. She allowed just one hit, struck out two to improve to 3-7 on the season. Berkes suffered the loss in relief. She tossed the final four innings, allowing two run, one earned on three hits. She struck out two and walked one. Clayton and Peck each went 2-for-3 with Peck stroking a pair of doubles for the Highlanders. Seid and Wirkowski had a pair of hits for the Bears. |
