Highlanders Swept by Lady Buccaneers

Radford, Va. -- East Tennessee State claimed a sweep over Radford University in softball action from Dedmon Center Field this afternoon. The Lady Buccaneers pounded out 21 hits as they posted 7-0 and 7-2 wins to improve to 12-8 on the year, while the Highlanders fall to 5-17 overall.

The Lady Bucs took game one behind a complete game two-hitter by Tiffany McVay. She struck out one and walked two, improving to 5-2 this season. ETSU posted a run in the second on a RBI triple by Rhea Holler. They would strike again in the fourth, exploding for five runs. The key blow was a two-run double by Mary Beth Hazelwood. They added another run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Lindsay Lane.

Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md.) dropped to 4-7 on the season. She went the distance for the Highlanders, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits, striking out six and walking none.

In game two, each team traded single runs in the first two innings. ETSU’s Lane broke the 2-2 tie in the fifth with a run-scoring single to left. Lane finished the doubleheader, 5-for-7 with three doubles and four RBI. They would give themselves a comfortable lead with a four-run sixth that was highlighted by a three-run homer by Janine Sprague. Sprague went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Radford’s rally in the bottom half of the inning was unsuccessful as they left the bases loaded. The Highlanders left nine runners on base the entire game.

ETSU’s Jennifer Fraser (4-5) picked up the complete game win. She allowed an earned run on seven hits, striking out one and walking four. Deana Benner (Glen Burnie, Md.) took the complete-game loss, falling to 1-10 on the season. She gave up six earned runs on 11 hits, struck out six and walked three batters. Donita Brady (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Amanda Walling (Summerville, S.C.) each went 2-for-3 in the game.

The Highlanders are back in action tomorrow when they face new Big South member Texas A&M Corpus Christi at The Winthrop Softball Complex. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
