Kvilhaug Announced as Highlanders' Softball Coach

RADFORD, Va. -- Athletic Director Greig Denny has announced the hiring of Amy Kvilhaug as the Highlanders Head Softball Coach.

"We believe Amy will be a great fit for the RU softball program," said Greig Denny. "She is a young, but experienced, softball coach who demonstrates a great enthusiasm and passion for the sport of softball."

Kvilhaug begins her first head coaching stint after spending the last three seasons as an assistant at her alma mater Providence College. During her time with the Friars, she worked primarily with the pitchers and assisted with recruiting and all other administrative and coaching duties.

"I am thrilled with the opportunity I have been given to lead a softball program with a lot of potential, both in the Big South and regionally," said Kvilhaug. "I plan to set high goals for the team and program, and with the help of what I consider to be a very supportive administration and athletic staff, I believe we can achieve much success."

A four-year letterwinner at PC from 1993-1996, Kvilhaug earned BIG EAST Rookie-of-the-Year honors in 1993 to go along with First Team All-BIG EAST, Second Team All-New England and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament MVP that same year. As a team captain, she helped lead the Friars to a BIG EAST Championship in 1994 and the ECAC Championship in 1995. She left PC holding single season school records in appearances (30), games started (29), innings pitched (215.2) and wins (24).

"I am confident her collegiate playing and coaching experience will prove to be invaluable as we continue to develop our softball program," said Denny.

Prior to Providence, she spent the 1999 season as an assistant at Seton Hall where she played an instrumental part in turning around a team that had finished 0-15 in the BIG EAST to a 14-2 conference record a year later. She also spent one year at Rutgers in 1998 and the year before as the pitching coach at Florida Southern College.

A native of Taunton, Massachusetts, Kvilhaug graduated from Taunton High School in 1992 and Providence College in 1996 with a bachelors of science in marketing.
