Benner and Bosley Lead Radford to Sweep Over Winthrop Radford, Va. -- Strong pitching from Deana Benner (Glen Burnie, Md.) and Jennifer Bosley (Oakland, Md.) helped Radford (9-23, 2-0 BSC) to a sweep over Winthrop (18-22, 2-4) in Big South softball action from Terry Field. The Highlander duo gave up a combined two runs, one earned, and seven hits in a pair of complete game victories. Radford won 6-1 and 2-1 in nine innings. Benner struck out two batters, and now holds the career strikeout record at Radford with 311. Donita Brady (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored, what proved to be the winning run, on a wild pitch with one out in the ninth to give the Highlanders a 2-1 victory over the Lady Eagles, and a sweep in the doubleheader. Bosley (6-11) went the distance for the victory, giving up three hits and walking one batter. She struck out 14 batters, tying the school record for the second time this season. Kelli Johnson suffered the loss in relief without giving up a hit. She finished the final three innings, allowing an unearned run, striking out three and walking one. Shana Ashard started for the Lady Eagles, giving up a run on seven hits, striking out three and walking three. The Highlanders opened up the scoring in the fourth when Hallie East (Roanoke, Va.) drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Amber Drexel (Knoxville, Kent.) who led off the inning with a single. Winthrop responded in their bottom half of the inning on a RBI double by Janiva Willis. Lara Wohlgemuth (Centreville, Va.), Drexel and Tina Rogers (Fairport, N.Y.) each collected two hits for the Highladners. In game one, Radford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back on their way to their first Big South win of the season. Ashley Smith (Roanoke, Va.) produced the big blow in the first with a two-run single to left, knocking in Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas) and Wohlgemuth. Smith scored on an error to make it 3-0. Smith finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. They would add two more in the third on a RBI bunt single by Drexel and an error by the catcher. Rogers drove in the sixth run with a single in the fifth. The Eagles ruined the shutout in the sixth scoring on an error. Benner improved to 3-12 as she allowed an unearned run on four hits and walked three. Drexel went 2-for-2, while Tolleson scored a pair of runs for the Highlanders. Radford will be in action on April 9 when they travel to Appalachian State for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. |
