Highlander Tennis Swept by High Point Radford, Va. - Radford’s men’s and women’s tennis squads were swept by High Point this afternoon from Dedmon Center Courts. The men fell in a tight match, 4-3, while the women dropped a 7-0 decision. RU’s men fall to 11-8 overall and 4-2 in the Big South, while HPU improves to 14-3, 6-1. RU’s women fall to 3-10, 1-5 in the Conference and HPU improves to 9-7, 5-2. In the men’s match, HPU took the double point when the No. 2 team of Mike Tolman and Dave Perren rallied from a 6-3 deficit and fended off a match point to defeat RU’s Andre’ Cavaco (Faro, Portugal) and Arthur Vasarevic (Zagreb, Croatia), 9-7. In single competition, Vasarevic at No. 2, Robel Mengisteab (Kista, Sweden) at No. 5 and Dominic Soeur (Herndon, Va.) at No. 6 won in straight sets for the Highlanders. For HPU, Mike Tolman, Chris Archer, and Jack Notton won at No. 1, 3 and 4 to secure the win for the Panthers. HPU women’s team swept through the doubles to earn the first point of the match. They would take all six singles matches. Two of those matches went to three sets. At No. 2, Cristina Glas (Irun, Spain) fell to Ann-Charlott Talus 0-6, 6-4, 1-6, while at No. 3 Caroline Downs (Radford, Va.) dropped at tough match, 7-6, 4-6, 4-6 to Suzanne Celensu. Radford’s men head to Appalachian State on Friday at 2 p.m. The two teams close out the regular season with a home match against Longwood on Saturday at 1 p.m. Men’s Results HPU 4, Radford 3 Singles 1.
