Tennis Teams Fall in Big South First Round

Radford, Va. - Radford University’s men’s and women’s tennis teams fell in the first round of the Big South Tournament this afternoon from Winthrop University. The fourth seeded men’s team fell to Charleston Southern (6-11), while the seventh-seeded women’s team was defeated by second-seeded Coastal Carolina (15-5). The men end their season at 12-10 and the women finish up at 3-12.

In the men’s match, Charleston Southern won the doubles point taking the #2 and #3 matches. Radford’s No. 1 team of Brandon Johnson (Roanoke, Va.) and Dominic Soeur (Herndon, Va.) won a close match, 9-7. The No. 2 match was also a tightly contested match with the team of defeating Arthur Vasarevic (Zagreb, Croatia) and Andre’ Cavaco (Faro, Portugal), 9-8.

In singles play, Joakim Arhammar (Sollentuna, Sweden) earned RU’s lone point with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No.3. Charleston Southern wrapped up the match with victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles.

RU’s women were swept in all three doubles matches and fell at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles against Coastal Carolina.
