ASHEVILLE, N.C.--Barrett Locke scored two goals and Jordan Holthouser scored the game-winner with 20 minutes left as UNC Asheville rallied past Radford, 3-2 in Big South Conference soccer action at Greenwood Field Wednesday afternoon. (Box Score)
The Bulldogs (2-1-1, 1-0 BSC) trailed the Highlanders, 2-1 at halftime but scored twice in the second half to pick up the victory. Radford threatened late and fired the final five shots of the game but goalkeeper Ben Saylor picked up her first collegiate victory with some big saves in the final five minutes.
The Highlanders (1-1-2) struck for two goals late in the first half to grab a 2-1 halftime lead. However, Locke tied the game when he scored off a feed from John Chapuis and Daniel Bandoly. The goal came at the 55:16 mark and make it 2-2.
The winning goal came 14 minutes later when Bandoly sent a long pass to Holthouser who fired the ball into the goal from 10 yards for a 3-2 Asheville lead at the 69:31 mark.
Radford came close to tying the game late as Andres Hernandez hit a shot that Saylor saved with five minutes left.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first half when Greg Yelverton sent a perfect pass to Locke. Yelverton booted a ball 25 yards that Locke headed in to the back of the net from 10 yards out to give Asheville a 1-0 lead at the 28:2 1mark.
Radford came right back. After a foul was called on the Bulldogs, the Highlanders were awarded a direct kick. David Stannard’s direct kick from 25 yards out found the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. The goal came at the 33:37 mark.
The Highlanders took the lead, 2-1 almost five minutes later when Patrick Colas scored on a breakaway at the 38:45 mark. He was given a perfect pass by David Harpula.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to play at home Friday (Sept. 17) against Campbell at home but that match has been postponed due to the expected arrival of Hurricane Ivan in the Asheville area on Thursday night. Asheville’s next match will be at East Carolina Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
