Radford, Va. - Radford University’s Athletic Department has announced the hiring of James Ashley, Shawn Hindy and Jonathan Williamson as assistant coaches to the women’s soccer, field hockey and men’s soccer programs respectively.
Ashley, a native of Sebring, Fla., joins Ben Sohrabi’s coaching staff after finishing his playing career at Maryville College. He will work primarily with the goalkeepers and be in charge of conditioning and assists in game-day operations, recruiting, practice and travel for the women’s soccer team.
Ashley was a three-year letterman in goal for the Scots under Pepe Fernandez. He earned the team award after the 2003 season. Prior to joining the soccer program, Ashley was a place kicker on the football team his freshman year. He graduated this spring with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.
A native of Westlake Village, Calif., Hindy has enjoyed an extensive playing career which includes a current nine-year spell on the United States National Team (35 Caps, 19 goals) and stints with international club teams in Australia and Spain.
Head coach Jeff Woods is familiar with Hindy, dating back to when Woods coached Hindy on the 1995 Olympic Festival team, playing in Boulder, Colo. In National Team competition, he helped the squad to fifth place finishes at the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2000 Pan American Cup. In 2003, he was a member of 2003 Pan American Cup Qualifying team that finished second and took part in the first Indoor World Cup in Leipzig, Germany. He also was an alternate on the 1996 Olympic Team.
Hindy graduated from San Diego State in the spring of 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Financial Services and a minor in Spansh.
Williamson, tabbed to be Spencer Smith’s assistant, is responsible for assisting in game-day operations, recruiting, practice and travel for the men’s soccer team. A native of Manassas, Va., Williamson joins the Highlanders after spending the past summer playing for the Reading Rage, a semi-pro team in Reading, Penn.
Williamson was a four-year starter for Bridgewater College, playing both forward and midfielder. He collected numerous honors, playing in every game during his career, including the BC Offensive Player of the Year award his senior season. He garnered First Team All-Conference honors from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and First Team All-State honors from the Virginia Sports Information Directors as a senior. A team captain as a junior and senior, Williamson was also named to the All-Tournament team at the Johns Hopkins tournament his junior year and Honorable Mention All-Conference as a sophomore.
Williamson graduated from Bridgewater in the spring of 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in History.
