Eagle Rally Sinks Radford Baseball

ROCK HILL, S.C.--Daniel Carte's two-run home run in the seventh inning capped a three-run rally as Winthrop took a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Radford on Sunday in Big South Conference baseball action at The Winthrop Ballpark. (Box Score)

Carte’s home run lifted Winthrop to 32-20 overall and 14-7 in Big South play as the Eagles took two of three games from the Highlanders this weekend. Radford fell to 21-25 overall and 12-9 in league action with the loss.

Chris Carrara started the seventh inning rally with a one-out single up the middle. Carrara scored on Jacob Dempsey’s fourth triple of the season to cut Radford’s lead to 4-3. Carte's home run gave Winthrop a 5-4 lead.

Kevin Slowey put the Highlanders down in order in the eighth and Jon Wilson did the same in the ninth, striking out Radford slugger Mark Fleisher to end the game.

Slowey (8-4) gave up three runs (one earned) in five relief innings to pick up the win. Wilson tossed a perfect ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season.

Bursey (1-3) went two-thirds of an inning and gave up the home run to Carte to take the loss. Starter Josh Deaver, who gave up four runs on 11 hits in six and one-third innings.

Radford scored first, plating a run in the third to take the lead. Jesse Ross tripled past the diving Carte with one out in the inning. He scored on a sacrifice to center by Fleisher to give the Highlanders the lead.

The RU lead was short-lived as Winthrop got on the scoreboard on a two-run home run by Jacob Dempsey, his seventh of the season, to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead in the third.

The Highlanders added two in the fifth and one in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.

Dempsey led the Eagles offensively, going 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and three RBI. He also scored twice. Carrara, Carte, Scoggin and Lentz also had two hits a piece.

Stuart Ritchie had two hits and one RBI for Radford, while Fleisher drove in two runs.

Winthrop ends the regular season with a four-game road trip, starting with a Tuesday game versus The Citadel. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Joe Riley Park in Charleston, SC.
