contact: Bruce Mahin at 831-6174 for more information
Radford University's Center for Music Technology in association with the multimedia center's "Aspire" series will bring together the work of university composers and artists in a concert of new music and video at 8 p.m. on Thursday March 8 in Preston Hall. The program features the work of internationally renown composers John Beall, Harry Bulow, Joseph Blaha, James Caldwell and Bruce Mahin. A panel discussion with the composers titled "Music under the influence: popular music in the concert hall" will begin at 7:15 p.m. This event is also supported, in part, by the university's Scholarly Lectures Series and the multimedia center's Aspire! Series.
The program features popular music influences such as "Hanging with Clifford," a tribute to jazz musician Clifford Brown, and "Macon Boogie," a work scored for two pianos and drum set. "Galileo," another work inspired by popular culture, features electronic wind instrument, interactive computer and video created by Jennifer Spoon, Eloise Philpot and Pamela Evans. Spoon and Philpot are faculty in the university Art Department. Evans works in the university multimedia laboratory as a trainer and technician. The concert is free and open to the public.
